Angel Blanket Story PDF Print E-mail
Based on my grandmother’s blanket design from the 1940’s, I created receiving blankets for my own children before each one’s arrival. Sewn from cotton flannel and cotton sheeting, these became daily necessities in our home. They were equally treasured by Robert and me, as much as by our children. For three generations the McCallum family has used these blankets and now as parents ourselves, we quickly understood why. These were the blankets of choice to swaddle our newborns, wrap our nursing babies in – keeping both the baby and mom comfortable and every toddler’s favorite security blanket. We had some name-brand blankets around our house too, but those rarely came out of the linen closet.
As newborns, our babies had weights ranging from 7lbs 7oz - 9lbs 11oz.  Store-bought receiving blankets didn’t work for our family, most were much too small. After experimenting, we decided my blankets measuring 36 inches by 40 inches were the best size of any we had tried. Not too big, not too small - they were just right!

As our family grew, we realized some of my homemade blankets had managed to last through all four of our children! Amazing! I still have the one my grandma made me 36 years ago, so it made sense. Having been laundered hundreds of times, my homemade blankets weren’t wearing out; the cottons were only becoming softer! The same could not be said about most of the expensive name brand blankets we owned. These didn’t feel nice anymore; most were pilled or had become out of shape. One designer blanket had actually become a dangerous potential hazard when our second daughter was 1 year old. Received as a gift, it was polyester fleece with a satin trim.
Due to faulty construction, Mariah was able to pull a portion of the trim loose creating a large loop, which she could fit over her head. Thankfully, she was never injured and the blanket was immediately destroyed. This experience made me determined to produce my blankets on a larger scale so they would be available to everyone. We as parents have enough things in this world to protect our children from; their baby blanket should never one of them! Some ask why we don’t use satin trims, this is why. We have never used trims on our products and we never will. Always soft and protective, the Angel Blanket feels like Heaven!™
